When a basement wall bows or leans inward, the soil outside is winning. In most cases we can hold it in place with carbon fiber, steel, or anchors — no rebuild — and stop it from moving any further.
Basement walls bow inward when the pressure from the soil outside gets stronger than the wall can resist. Around Trenton that pressure usually comes from clay-heavy soil that swells when it's wet, water building up against the foundation with nowhere to drain, and freeze-thaw cycles over the winter that push on the wall a little more each year.
A bowing wall rarely fixes itself, and it doesn't have to be replaced to be safe. Once we measure how far it's moved, we can usually hold it in place and, in some cases, gradually straighten it back over time. The goal is to stop the movement and take the wall off the clock.
